In Memory of Comrade DORCAS DUMSILE MWELASE (25 February 1966 - 25 February 2018)
03 April 2018 - Dorcas Dumsile Mwelase, was born on 25 February 1966, in KwaNgenetsheni, Vryheid to her late parents Mr Alfred Mwelase and Mrs Alzinah Mwelase.
Dorcas Dumsile Mwelase, was a dedicated, humble, loyal, selfless, friend, mother, sister and comrade. Her activism led her to become a member of the Mpukunyoni Community Property Association (MCPA), which challenges negative mining impacts created by Somkhele Coal Mine.
Comrade Dumsile was elected as the General Secretary of the MCPA on 28 March 2015, and started to work at the office of the organisation as an Administrator, a position she held until her death.
A hard-working cadre, she did everything in her power to succeed in whatever she was doing and also strived to put the needs of the community and association first. She fought against injustice and mobilizer community members so that they could empower themselves.
In her fight against injustice, Dumsile went against powerful people and individual by arranging protests around: Somkhele Clinic processes, where the community challenged the recruitment process around the construction of the maternity ward. She also empowered the community to resist the corruption and abuse of infrastructure carried out by the Mpukunyoni Traditional Authority.
She also continuously resisted coal mining in the community and kept government accountable. She fought tirelessly with many NGOs by her side, and shone a spotlight on Somkhele Coal Mine’s disregard for the community and their human rights abuses and pollution.
Dumsile fell sick in January 2018 and finally lost her life 25 February 2018.
She was not only a colleague, but a sister and a friend to the committee and all the members of the association.
