More about groundWork
groundWork is a non-profit environmental justice service and developmental
organization working primarily in South Africa but increasingly in Southern
Africa.
groundWork seeks to improve the quality of life of
vulnerable people in South Africa, and increasingly in Southern Africa,
through assisting civil society to have a greater impact on environmental
governance. groundWork places particular emphasis on assisting
vulnerable and previously disadvantaged people who are most affected by
environmental injustices.
Our current project areas are:

STAFF
groundWork was established in mid-1999 by five trustees and three
staff members: Bobby Peek, Linda Ambler and Gillian Addison. We
currently have six permanent staff members as following:
groundWork's director is Bobby Peek, who has received international
recognition for his campaigning work in the South Durban basin around
toxic industry and waste issues. He has also been active in campaigning
locally and internationally around the Thor Chemicals debacle. He is a
recipient of the prestigious Goldman Foundation award and has been invited
to present papers in local, government and international fora.
Ferrial
Adam is groundWork's project support coordinator and researcher.
She has recently completed a MPhil in Environmental Management at U.C.T.
She has previously worked for the Department of Foreign Affairs and has
a history of active involvement in community organising.

Gill Addison is our administrator. She has previously worked
for the Group for Environmental Monitoring, the IDRC and EJNF, amongst
others.
Ardiel
Soeker is the Coordinator of groundWork's Air Quality Project
and as such is responsible for our "bucket brigade" and oil
refinery campaigns. Ardiel is an experienced community organiser.
He is based in Cape Town.
Llewellyn
Leonard is the Coordinator of groundWork's waste projects.
His areas of focus are incineration, medical waste, hazardous waste and
industrial landfill sites. Llewelyn has a BSc Honours in Geography and
a Masters in Water Quality and Environmental Management.
Bathoko
Sibisi is the assistant administrator. She has over five years'
experience working with local and international NGOs in the environmental
justice field. In addition to keeping the office running from day to day,
Bathoko is also responsible for conference co-ordination.
TRUSTEES
groundWork’s trustees are: Richard Lyster, a human
rights and labour lawyer, Farid Esack, a Muslim Cleric and gender
activist, Thuli Makama, Director of a Swaziland NGO Yonge Nawe,
Sandile Ndawonde, Director of Pietermaritzburg CBO, GREEN, Patrick
Kulati,a committed environmentalist working for Surplus People's Project,
Joy Kistnasamy, an environmental health academic and activist,
and Jon White,a Pietermaritzburg attorney and chairperson of groundWork.
